Focus was the topic. It was also the method.
The Challenge
"The Attention Crisis in Education: Children Suffering the Effects" was the culminating project for my first graduate-level course, a white paper on the topic of focus, requiring an original argument and professionally designed final document.
The paper examined how post-pandemic classrooms were struggling with students returning from years of screen-heavy, remote learning with shortened attention spans. The challenge was synthesizing a multi-cause problem of technology overuse, sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and the decline of sustained reading into a clear, evidence-based argument with actionable recommendations.

The Solution
The project unfolded in four deliberate stages: choosing a topic, building an outline, writing the article, and designing the final white paper. Each stage built on the last and demanded a different set of skills.

Johann Hari's Stolen Focus anchored the research, framing the argument across three areas: information overload, the collapse of sustained reading, and chronic stress as barriers to focus. The bibliography built outward from there, drawing on peer-reviewed journals, books, and academic coursework.
Key sources included research on technology overuse in education, educator strategies for declining attention spans, and Donella Meadows' systems thinking frameworks — which shaped the paper's core argument that the crisis requires intervention at multiple levels, not a single fix. Connecticut standardized assessment data and iReady growth research grounded the argument in measurable outcomes.
Outlining and Argumentation
The mind map developed early in the process, centered on the theme “Fix Your Focus”, helped organize the argument spatially before committing to a linear structure. From there, the white paper was structured around the natural arc of a policy argument: defining the problem, explaining its causes, presenting the stakes, and proposing solutions. Sections moved from “What is it? Why is it happening?” through “The Breakdown” and “Sustained Reading” to “Steps to Resolve the Crisis,” concluding with a call to action addressed to parents, teachers, and students alike.
Writing the Article
The paper addressed educators, policymakers, and parents, moving through the causes of the attention crisis before turning to concrete recommendations: modular assessments, brain breaks, balanced technology use, and a community-wide commitment to protecting children's attention. Supporting data included the 40% decline in the novel market between 2008 and 2016 and an 85-minute average nightly sleep loss in children over the last century.
Designing the White Paper
The design phase transformed the written article into a visually cohesive, professionally formatted document. A warm, earthy color palette with cream backgrounds, brown typography, and tan iconography was chosen to evoke calm and seriousness without feeling clinical.
Line illustrations and custom icons were paired with each section to visually reinforce key themes. Data visualizations, including bar charts on reading decline and a chart from iReady on student growth outcomes, were embedded to support the argument. Pull quotes were formatted with decorative quotation marks to elevate the most compelling expert voices. The result was a document that functioned both as a persuasive argument and as a polished design artifact.
The Outcome
The white paper was recognized as a strong example of graduate-level research and communication design, later published on LinkedIn where it reached educators and industry professionals. It has since been used by the professor as a model for future students — recognition of both the final product and the process behind it.
The project set an early standard in graduate study, establishing an approach that balances deep research with clear, audience-appropriate communication.
